How do we as consumers check to see how the brands we rely on are being sustainable stewards?  How do we as business owners let our customers know that we’re taking the common good into account in sustainability practices?  Enter the B Corp certification.  More than 900 companies have already signed on, including Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s.  But there’s more work to do.  If you’re a strategist, designer, or a business owner, take a look at the B Corp certification process, and see it as an opportunity to improve not only how you’re perceived, but also how you conduct your day-to-day business operations.

Think of the B-Corp as a certification system that’s much like Fair Trade.  As you consider moving your agency/consulting company or your clients into a sustainable model, figuring out how you fit into this picture is crucial to the process.

The B Corp movement is one of the most important of our lifetime, built on the simple fact that business impacts and serves more than just shareholders—it has an equal responsibility to the community and to the planet.  Rose Marcario, CEO of Patagonia
